How to Calculate Your Age for Exam and Job Eligibility
Updated 7 November 2026 · 4 min read
Work out your exact age on a cut-off date in years, months and days, and avoid common mistakes with age limits in notifications.
Why the cut-off date matters
Recruitment and exam notifications usually state an age limit ‘as on’ a specific date, such as 1 August of the exam year. Your age on that date decides eligibility — not your age on the day you fill in the form.
Steps
Open the Age Calculator:
- Enter your date of birth exactly as on your certificates.
- Change the ‘as on’ date to the cut-off date in the notification.
- Read your age in completed years, months and days.
Understanding ‘not less than’ and ‘not more than’
‘Not more than 27 years’ usually means you must not have completed 28 years by the cut-off date — check the exact wording, which often gives birth-date limits such as ‘born not earlier than’ and ‘not later than’ specific dates. When those dates are given, compare your date of birth with them directly.
Age relaxation
Many notifications allow extra years for certain categories. Add the relaxation to the upper age limit, then compare it with your calculated age. The exact rules differ between exams, so read the notification carefully.
Common mistakes
Avoid these errors:
- Swapping day and month in the date of birth.
- Using today's date instead of the cut-off date.
- Rounding up — eligibility uses completed years only.
