How to Split a PDF or Extract Only the Pages You Need
Updated 7 November 2026 · 4 min read
Pull out page 1 of a certificate, a single chapter or a range of pages from a long PDF — free and without uploading the file.
When splitting helps
Splitting is useful when a portal asks for one page only, when a long report must be shared chapter by chapter, or when a combined scan needs to become separate documents. It is also the quickest way to make a PDF smaller: fewer pages means fewer images.
Writing page ranges
Page ranges use commas and hyphens. ‘1-3, 5, 8-10’ means pages 1 to 3, page 5 and pages 8 to 10. Numbers refer to the order of pages inside the file, which may differ from numbers printed on the pages — for example when a report starts with an unnumbered cover.
Steps
Open Split PDF:
- Choose your PDF.
- Type the pages you want, or choose ‘Every page’ to make one file per page.
- Pick whether all selected pages go into one PDF or each range becomes its own file.
- Download the result — several files arrive together as a ZIP.
Removing private pages before sharing
If a document includes a page with bank details, an ID number or personal notes, extract only the other pages and share that new file. The removed page is not hidden — it simply isn't in the new PDF.
Tips
A few things worth knowing:
- Extracted pages keep their original quality; nothing is re-compressed.
- If the extracted PDF must be below a size limit, compress it afterwards.
- Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked in your PDF app before splitting.
